Jin Y. Kim, DDS, MPH, MS, FACD

Dr. Brown will speak on:

“The Future of Lasers in Periodontal Therapy:  Science, Hype or Snake Oil”

Substantial controversy continues to surround the use of lasers in periodontal therapy. The results of recent research studies suggest that lasers provide a viable alternative to traditional periodontal surgery. Properly applied, lasers produce less bleeding, swelling and discomfort. They treat the cause of periodontal disease rather than the effects, by specifically targeting identifiable periodontal pathogens. Regeneration of periodontal tissues is the gold standard by which we measure treatment effectiveness. Evidence is emerging that lasers provide an enhanced method for achieving this elusive goal, while eliminating many of the negative side effects commonly associated with conventional pocket elimination surgery.

• Numerous examples of exceptionally favorable clinical outcomes

• How are lasers used to effectively treat periodontal disease?

• What are the differences between the many lasers being used in dentistry and how they differ from each other? Are they all created equal?

• What is LANAP and is there evidence to support this treatment modality?

• Is there evidence that lasers may be effective in treating Peri-Implant Disease?

• Is this method of treatment a “flash in the pan” or does this represent the dawn of a new future, solidly based on biology and physics.

Dr. McCawley will speak on:

"Using Microbiology to Improve the Outcome of Implant and Periodontal Therapies"

This presentation will discuss evidence based anti-infective therapy involving first identifying specific periodontal pathogens and their antibiotic sensitivities then designing specific strategies to reduce or eradicate them and prevent their return in both teeth and implants.

The speaker will also present his recently published groundbreaking research on the ability of LANAP to totally eliminate cultured bacteria in most pockets.

and on

"Treatment Planning for Success in Practice and in Life"

The first part of this presentation will review the key areas involved in thriving in the new dental economy including the 5 key secrets to having a great practice and a great income. The second part of this presentation will discuss the key strategies to living a highly successful life as outlined in Dr. McCawley’s best-selling book “The 4 Simple Secrets to Avoiding Life’s BIG financial MESSTAKES- Rediscovering the Simple Secrets to a Great Income, Financial Independence and Most Importantly a GREAT LIFE!”

Dr. Kim will speak on:

"Why is Periodontal Disease So Easy to Treat, or Not"

Despite numerous changes and innovations in the management, aand therapeutical approaches to periodontal dieases in modern years, we, as a profession have yet to "conquer" this most common disease of the mankind. Dr. Kim will guide the participants through the history of periodontal therapy from non-surgical to surgical, and auxillary and interdisciplinary management of attachment loss and tooth loss with clinical evidence as to what works, and what simply does not. Where does endodontic therapy, dental implants, and prosthodontic therapy come in to modern day, contemporary periodontics? Come and find out for yourself.

He has recently been selected as an Examiner for the American Board of Periodontology.

Dr. Thomas McCawley has practiced in Fort Lauderdale for over 30 years. A graduate of the University of Illinois College Of Dentistry, Dr. McCawley holds a specialty degree in Periodontics from Boston University School of Graduate Dentistry. He is an adjunct clinical assistant professor at the College of Dental Medicine at Nova Southeastern University and formerly at Temple University College of Dentistry. He is co-chairman of clinical Periodontics at the Broward Community College Dental Research Clinic and a Fellow of the prestigious American College of Dentists.

Dr. McCawley lectures frequently to universities and dental groups throughout the country and internationally on “Periodontics for the 21 Century – The Latest Advances in Anti – Infective Therapy,” and on Practice and Life Management.

He recently presented new groundbreaking research on laser effects on bacteria at the AADR meeting and will be lecturing about this study at the AAP meeting in San Francisco. He has published several articles including research on lasers in the Journal of the American Academy of Periodontology and the Journal of the Florida Dental Association. In 2009, at the height of the financial crisis, he published a book to help young dentists and others with their life balance and finances that has sold over 1500 copies and he has donated over 500 copies to dental students at Nova and many others.
