Complications in Implant Dentistry

Complications are unavoidable in implant dentistry and are encountered as a routine. Complications and treatment risks can been categorized as biologic, mechanical or technical in nature, allowing for clinician to better manage both diagnosis and treatment when required. This categorization will be detailed.

Many complications are iatrogenic in nature, often the result of compromised planning and/or poor execution. This program will consider both esthetic and functional ramifications of planning and treatment decisions. A detailed discussion of possible management of complications, once evident, will also be considered.

This presentation will conclude by considering the avoidance of complications through incorporation of diagnostic and treatment procedures that reduce treatment risk. Such procedures will include effective team planning, options for definitive restorative materials, and changing treatment protocols.

Learning Objectives:

1. List and comprehend the categorization of complications in implant and esthetic dentistry

2. Understand esthetic complications, and objective esthetic evaluations of outcomes with a view to managing risk

3. Discuss prosthodontic procedures that may reduce the incidence of complications in implant dentistry through effective management of treatment risk

complications associated with implant
surgery can have a devastating effect on the
final outcome of treatment. This lecture
course will focus on how to identify and avoid
potential complications before they arise and
how to manage many of the common
complications that can occur with implant
therapy. Emphasis will be given to medicolegal
implications, patient risk assessment,
classifications of complications, and proper
treatment planning principles. At the end of
this course, participants will have a better
understanding of the prevention and management of complications related to implant therapy.

The number of claims related to implant
complications has increased significantly
over the last few years. In addition,
